Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who was a contemporary of Freud's. However, unlike Freud, Jung believed that the human psyche is comprised of not only the conscious and unconscious, but also a collective unconscious that contains archetypes, or universal symbols and patterns of behavior that are common to all people. Jung's theory of personality emphasizes the importance of individuation, or the process of integrating the various aspects of the self, including the unconscious and collective unconscious, into a coherent whole.

 

 

Jung proposed several dichotomies that he believed were central to understanding personality, including extraversion/introversion, sensing/intuition, and thinking/feeling. Extraverts are characterized by a focus on external stimuli, while introverts are more focused on their own inner experience. Sensing types are more concerned with objective sensory information, while intuitive types are more concerned with subjective impressions and possibilities. Finally, thinking types are more analytical and logical, while feeling types are more focused on interpersonal relationships and emotional expression.
