This brief contains topics on human development and other theoretical concepts related to the course. Human development is a complex interplay between biology, psychology and society. It is more than just a biological process. The physical domain consists of growth and changes in the body, whereas the cognitive domain involves learning, attention, memory, language and thinking. The psychosocial aspect deals with emotion, personality and social relationships. The physical domain help professionals to estimate the weight and normative development of children and teens. They are also aware of changes in the fine and gross motor skills of students. The cognitive domain involves mental processes, thinking, learning and understanding. Adolescent development involves the ability to think logically and engaging in moral reasoning. In the cognitive domain, professionals mainly aim to evaluate cognitive functions such as brain developments and changes in the brain’s function. In this area, student will be assessed by observing a child in any institute and deciding how far a particular child is growing in different domains.
The psychosocial domain is ability to assess both the psychological and social domain of infants and caregivers. It consists of looking at different emotions, personality, self-esteem and relationships. Psychosocial development may continue across adulthood and good understanding of psychosocial domain can help in the understanding of various other problems such as parenting, friends, divorce, remarriage and blended families. The course will examine human development throughout the modules and it can help to learn about infancy, early childhood, adolescence, young adulthood and middle adulthood.

It is important for students to learn about human development because of various factors. Firstly, the course is taught under various subjects such as family studies, sociology or human development. Secondly, the course will describe observations during the development and examining the application of theories. The BEH352 course covers lecture notes as well as lessons on human development and theoretical approaches to human development. It covers how people change and the nature by looking at the following factors:
Is the change in a person continuous or discontinuous?
Is the pattern of change same for everyone or different?
How genetics and environment factors influence development?
To solve the BEH352 course assignments, it is important that the students understand continuous and discontinuous development. The concepts are as follows:
Continuous development: It reviews development as a cumulative process where existing skills improve gradually. For example, a child’s physical growth can add inches to the heights every year. In contrast, discontinuous development involves the development that takes place at specific time and those that occurs at specific stage and time. With this type of development, the change is more sudden. With this approach, one can determine if the development is same or universal for all children.

The assessments will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a quiz and short answer activity. The quiz will involve multiple choice questions consisting of 50 or 100 questions. The weightage of the quiz lessons will be 60% and the overall eligibility criteria will be minimum score of 50%. The second part of the assessment will be a child observation activity. It will involve testing student’s knowledge in applying human developmental theories by means of child observation and lesson planning activity. To be successful in this assessment, it is important that students have clear understanding about each development concepts and milestones at different stages. By this approach, they can be successful in implementing practical lessons. The second assessment will have a weightage of 50% and it is essential that each student achieve a minimum score of 45%.
Psychoanalytic theory: The psychoanalytic theory depends on issues such as determinism and the unconscious. The psychoanalytic theory has been founded by Sigmund Freud and his assumption was that any person’s psychological responses and behavior determines biological instincts. Freud’s also postulated five stages of psychosexual development which are oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, latent stage and genital stage.
Biopsychosocial theory: The psychosocial theory has been defined by Erik Erikson. It emphasized on the challenges and tasks presented by humans. It emphasized development based on a social context. It is a type of epigenetic theory where the biological and genetic behaviors of people interact with environmental forces over the time.
Maturationist theory: It is a theory that is focused on childhood development and evolutionary theory. The theory was given by Granville Stanley Hall and its application to the study of nature. The theory emphasize on the significance of genetics and evolution.
Behaviorism theory: The Erikson’s theory introduced the social context to development and it pays emphasis on the impact of experience, learning and environment that promotes development. The second behavioral approach has been given by Bandura and it expanded the classical behavioral theory of development.
Ecological systems theory: The ecological theory emphasizes on social factors and the theory was developed by Bronfenbrenner. According to the ecological systems theory, child development takes place through a complex system. It involves extended family, childhood and neighborhood.
Cognitive development theory: The most renowned cognitive development theory is the theory by Piaget which emphasize on how humans gather and process information. Piaget believed that each children are born with mental structure based on which they engage in learning. For Piaget, the schema refers to the cognitive structures of different organization and his different experiences.
