There are a number of health and safety protocols that are at work when it comes to the construction sites in the UAE. As discussed Rehman et al. The Health and safety of the people working on construction sites are extremely important for the smooth running of the business. The recent protocols have taken into consideration the need for maintaining the health of the employees to ensure that the delivery of the work is done on time while maintaining the protocols directed by the government. The front-line workers in this case are especially supposed to be taken care of by providing them with health protective resources. Tamimi et al. (2017) talk about Total Safety Management (TSM) which is one of the best safety measures that is implemented for providing the employees with a safe environment in general and this is applied only on the construction sites only. This study states that there are mainly two areas that need to be protected and they include the safety of tower cranes in general and formworks that are temporary. The safety and health protocols, in this case, make it mandatory to take care of the safety and health measures in general. The quality of work is directly related to the health and safety protocols that are taken into consideration for construction work sites in general. In fact, the health and safety of the employees are often compromised and the use of drones in general so that the safety of the employees can be kept under check as they work on the construction site. Gas construction is taken into consideration here as this industry often involves a lot of risk in general. The best way to form a safety and health protocol is by conducting a survey. According to Asaad & El-Sayegh (2021), the UAE construction industry has to have safety and health protocols in place. It is important to highlight that the health and safety technologies are an extremely important strategy which needs to be elevated to ensure that the effects of COVID-19 can be eliminated in general. The management of the health and safety of the employees thus became a matter of concern and in doing so the health quick response is important to ensure that measures are taken into consideration so that actions can be taken promptly in case of threat in general.  There are a number of technologies that can be used to ensure that health and safety of the employees. Umar et al. (2019) talk about how in the UAE almost 70% of the construction organizations lack a serious understanding of the importance of safety and health policies in general. There are no proper health and safety officers who would analyze and inspect the conditions and health measures on the construction sites. The construction organizations, therefore, lack properly documented health and safety measures. Currently, the levels of health and safety are largely compromised and only 18% of the construction companies have proper measures in place for the employees in general. Therefore, currently, there is a need for health and safety projects that need to be undertaken to ensure that the accidents in the construction industry across the UAE despite their size can be reduced and later eliminated as far as possible.

 

Khalid et al. (2020) bring to light how leadership also plays an important part in the safety of the employees across the construction industry. This paper talks about how leaders play an important part in maintaining the construction site as they equip the team members to take care of themselves and at the same time adhere to health and safety rules. Currently, it is important for all the workers to have proper training with respect to health and safety. Every individual in this case should be able to take necessary measures when they or their partner is at risk. In addition, this paper makes use of experiments to understand the level of safety in the construction industry and it was found that in most cases even though the safety measures were not documented, they were implemented. The ethical dilemma related to providing health and safety to the employees is not clearly stated but it is clear that noncompliance with respect to the health and safety of the employees can give way to serious issues. The level of safety and health currently is largely compromised at the current moment. The absence of documented safety and health measures from the legal sphere has certainly increased the cases of accidents in the UAE. Al Zarooni, Awad & Alzaatreh, A. (2022) reports that there were 1700 cases of historical accidents that gained the limelight during the year 2019-2020. The accidents that take place are mostly related to falls, getting cut by sharp objects and getting burnt are the most common types of accidents that take place on the construction site. None of these can be eliminated completely at this stage but a properly planned out health and safety structure can certainly help in reducing these accidents. It is important to make use of safety equipment on the construction site. The survey clearly shows that most experts working in this industry have faced or experienced injuries due to a lack of knowledge about the need for implementing safety measures in general.

 

Awwad, El Souki & Jabbour (2016) talks about the way in which the construction industry is one of the most dangerous fields of working mostly because of the frequent accidents that are caused on the work site. It is clear that there are a number of safety laws that are created in different provinces but none of them are present at the national level. The improvement in the behavior of the workers can be achieved mostly by addressing five important factors namely work safety inspections, ensuring that the facilities for safety measures like the equipment are freely available, the permits of safety are available and lastly the work practices are also followed keeping in mind the safety of the workers. Gurmu (2019) talks about the factors that directly influence the implementation of the safety and health practices. It is clearly stated that the implementation of different practices with respect to the health and safety of the people are based on the finance that are available to the company in general. The article goes on to talk about the way in which the size of the company directly influences the health of the people involved in the constriction project in general. The developers are supposed to be responsible in this case and it is important to highlight that an impact of the safety and health measures also leads to savings on the part of the company involved in this case.

 

Brahmachary, Ahmed & Mia (2018) while talking about the impact of health and safety measures for the employees working on the construction sites connects it to the performance of these employees. In other words, the skillful workers can be retained as a result of properly employing the health and safety of the employees in general. The implementation of the practices to ensure that the employees feel safe and healthy in the working environment. The study clearly states that provisions need to be laid out keeping in mind the costs that would be needed to incurred by the owners in trying to protect the employees. Al Ghafri, Alawi & Shahri, M. A. (2020) talks about the way in which occupational health and safety has been a factor of debate over a period of time in fields where accidents are common like the construction industry. The study goes on to highlight that while there are certain practices in place but there is a distance between the reality and the idea of practices that needs to be implemented in general. The small and medium size companies in general have to ensure that this gap is bridged and in trying to do so it is certainly important to understand the needs of the situation. In this study it was found that the employees did not wear safety gears and nor did the construction sites have proper fences.

 

Enshassi, Saleh & Mohamed (2021) suggests the use of lean construction techniques in order to help the construction industry in the UAE to implement safety and health practices. This however needs the construction industry to take up the responsibility of improving the health and safety practices within this industry. The main barriers to health and safety practices that needs to be implemented is the lack of support from the government and it is important to stop relying on them and take up responsibility as an industry. At the same time, it is extremely important to educate the employees as well about the lean construction technique as it is only through education can these be implemented be done in general. It is thus important to provide the employees with regular and effective training. Enshassi, Ayyash & Choudhry (2016) also talks about training the employees about the practices that are embedded in the health and safety protocols. Training in this case is important and the only way to ensure that the safety and health protocols in the construction industry are put into effective in such a way that accidents which are avoidable are eliminated completely in this case. In order to understand the innovative concepts that needs to be applied, data can be derived and visual constructive data would act as a guideline to construct and implement the various practices. Building information modelling (BIM) is recognized as being an effective tool for the implementation of safety related practices in general. While this is an efficient way to ensure safety for all, the lack of knowledge around the same leads to drop in demand for BIM. Shafiq, Afzal, & Aljassmi (2021) talks about how the use of VDC or virtual design construction in addition to the use of BIM for ensuring the safety of the workers who are currently working at construction sites. The study clearly shows how technology has begun to play an important part in the construction industry in general. However, the use of this sophisticated technology can help in creating an extremely safe space for the employees in general. The training of the employees can also be done with utmost efficiency in this case as compared to making use of primitive ways of training in general.

 

 

Wong & Soo (2019) talks about how apart from training the employees about the safety measures it is also extremely important to ensure that personal protective equipment is introduced to the employees. The main reason in this case is that having private protective measures will allow all the employees to protect themselves. An emergency plan also needs to be created to protect the employees working on construction sites. Mishappening can take place at any time and it is thus important to have a proper emergency plan in place to avoid accidents as far as possible.  Maliha et al. (2021) talks about having more experienced people to work on dangerous construction sites. This will ensure that accidents can be avoided and safety barriers need to be created on construction sites as a mandatory rule. The combination of experience with safety precautions will act as being able to effectively employ health and safety regulations in general. The management in this case also has to provide equal participation in this case so that all the employees feel safe. Williams, Hamid & Misnan (2018) talks about the various researches that are conducted with the aim to uncover the factors that are responsible for the safety of the workers placed on the construction sites in general. The ethics that are created with respect to the workers should be created keeping in mind the safety of all the workers in question. An effective way to manage the accidents is by keeping a track of all the accidents that are caused within the construction site. The reasons can be found in this case and the issues can be tackled henceforth.
