The Birthmark is a short story examining obsession with human perfection by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book was first published in 1843 and later in 1846 in ‘Moses from an old manse’ which was a short story collection by the author. The narrator introduces his protagonist Aylmer as a brilliant philosopher and scientist who has abandoned his experience on experiments by marrying the beautiful Georgina. The narrator explains that the story is based on his wife while the protagonist asks about removing the birthmark on her cheek. Even Georgina supports her birthmark as a charm and it disappears when she starts blushing.

Georgina, after drinking it down, suddenly falls into a slumber where the main character notices that the hand shaped birthmark has started fading. The story by Nathaniel was an imperfection which is finely drawn by the concept that revealed the nature which implies imperfection where the main character craved perfection in his wife and sought for Immortality. The moral of the story defines puritan teams over romanticism in the 19th century when most of the romantic authors pushed back against the literacy style. In addition to this, the author Nathaniel supported concepts of science and conflicts with nature in the 19th century where romanticism was against these influences to describe and define everything. Unlike other practical authors, Nathaniel believed some subjects into scientific study and explication lesser than human emotion and control over life.
