A Brief Introduction of The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne

 

The Birthmark is a short story examining obsession with human perfection by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book was first published in 1843 and later in 1846 in ‘Moses from an old manse’ which was a short story collection by the author. The narrator introduces his protagonist Aylmer as a brilliant philosopher and scientist who has abandoned his experience on experiments by marrying the beautiful Georgina. The narrator explains that the story is based on his wife while the protagonist asks about removing the birthmark on her cheek. Even Georgina supports her birthmark as a charm and it disappears when she starts blushing.
