A process essay is a type of academic writing that describes a person, place, event, object, or experience. The purpose of a process essay is to create a vivid and detailed picture of the subject in the reader's mind, using sensory details, figurative language, and other literary techniques.
If you want to write a process essay, you must first know what a process paper or essay is. According to the process paper definition, this paper explains the process of creating something. The writers use a numerical order to write a process essay. While process papers are descriptive, they have all the features of a technical document. Readers can find that words like “next”, “later”, "eventually", and "finally" are frequently used to describe the process.
The features that characterize a process paper are –
The process essay structure resembles any other form of assignment. That means it can be broadly divided into –
So, if you are looking for writing tips for process papers or process essay introductions, always spend more time crafting a perfect introduction. It is the first part of the essay that the audience reads. So, ensure that it grabs attention from the very start. Be vivid in describing the backstory and why you are writing the paper. Be creative with words and phrases.
The objective is to stimulate the readers by keeping the language vibrant and lively. Moreover, in a process paper, you should let the readers know how much time it takes to make pasta. We live in a world where time is very precious. So, if you clear the time aspect through the paper, the readers will love reading it. Along with the estimated time, mention the ingredients and tools you would need in the recipe. You can share advice related to the preparations you can make in advance, which can help the readers to save time.
For example, if you are describing the recipe for pasta, you can start like this –
"Pasta is a classic Italian dish and is loved by people all over the world. The simplicity and the flavor of the sauce that accompanies pasta make it a popular dish in most countries. Making pasta doesn't take much time, as it can be made with 30 mins of preparation and 15 minutes of cooking. You need to keep the sauce, vegetables, and meat handy, and you can toss it with al-dente pasta and serve it hot. This paper explores how anyone can make pasta at home with minimal ingredients."
Before writing the main part of the process paper, draw an outline. Follow this outline throughout the process, and break the paper into manageable chunks. The writer should give close eyes to ensure the order of paragraphs and clarity of thought. Many topics need you to write in steps. In such cases, use the right words to maintain flow. Check that the transitions between paragraphs are smooth and connect one paragraph to the previous one.
Taking a cue from the previous example, you can design an outline like this –
The general thumb rule suggests that there should be three or more paragraphs in the body section. While writing process papers, you need to include considerable details. However, do not overload the paragraph with “fillers”. These are the details that one may deem unnecessary, and it decreases the readability of the body and confuses the readers.
Use the right transition words to make the paper look more coherent. Using terms like "next", "then", or "now" encourages the readers and makes the paper sound more compact. For example, in the recipe paper we mentioned before, you can write, “First, you need to make the sauce by mixing the tomato paste with basil, Italian seasoning and water. Then, you need to parboil the pasta until it is al dente and toss it in the sauce, along with the vegetables you choose.”
Also, avoid using first-person pronouns like, “I”, “Me”, “We”, “Us”, “Ours”, “Mine”, etc. Narrate the paper only in the second or third person as that makes the readers trust the instructions. Also, try adding cautionary notes or tips if you want. This may not be mandatory, but since you are describing a process, warning or notifying the readers about something certainly fetches you some brownie points.
Finally, mention in the process essay what people should do with the final product. This will give the readers an idea of what to expect and educate those new to the product. For example, “Keep the plates hot before serving the pasta. Keep grated cheese and Italian seasoning handy for your friends and families so that they can season some more if needed.”
In the final part, conclude the process paper by restating the importance of the topic. End the paper on a positive note, reminding the people why you spent hours completing the paper. Use words of encouragement, and praise, so that the readers feel motivated to read till the end.
For example, an ideal conclusion can be like this, “
“And that's how a plate of delicious pasta is ready! It is a delicious and quick meal, and you can enjoy eating with your family. There are different recipes for pasta, and feel free to experiment with a different sauce the next time. “
After you are done with the conclusion, you need to proofread the paper before it gets published. These are the steps you need to follow to proofread and edit the text –
